Why is Chiropractic Important for Kids?

"As the twig is bent, so grows the tree."

More and more parents are seeking Chiropractic Care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even 'natural' birthing methods can stress an child's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked immediately. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by your chiropractor.

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function and biomechanical pain. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.

Lastly, children respond quickly to care, and rarely need ongoing therapy. Chiropractic care for your children is vital to their health and is an absolute necessity to their development and for actualization of their full potential in every area of life.

The Dreaded Backpack: A Key to Kid's Pain and Bio-Mechanical Challenges

Let’s face it, you can’t stop kids from carrying backpacks especially with school lockers being removed from many schools. And, we, adults use them, too, for plenty of activities in addition to hiking. But, not all backpacks are equal when it comes to their impact on the musculoskeletal system of young and old, alike.

Step 1: Choose Right
Choosing the right size backpack is the most important step to safe backpack use.
Tip: Bring a friend to help you measure your backpack properly.

Step 2: Pack Right
The maximum weight of the loaded backpack should not exceed 20 % of your body weight, so pack only what is needed.
Tip: If the backpack forces the wearer to move forward to carry, it's overloaded.

Step 3: Lift Right
Face the Pack -Bend at the Knees - Use both hands and check the weight of the pack. - Lift with the legs - Apply one shoulder strap and then the other.
Tip: Don't sling the backpack onto one shoulder.

Step 4: Wear Right
Use both shoulder straps - snug, but not too tight.
Tip: When the backpack has a waist strap - use it.

In May, the American Chiropractic Association endorsed 9 models of backpacks from North Face. ( the Big Shot, Borealis, Box Shot, Cornice, Hotshot, On Sight, Recon, Surge, and Yavapai)

There will be a drawing on kids day for one lucky kid to
win a new North Face backpack!

End Running Injuries and Increase Efficiency and Endurance!

ChiRunning Registration ends July 12!

with Dr. Jeremy Busch
Global Healing Therapies
July 24, 2010: 9am to 4pm

More than 24 million people in the U.S. run, however 65% of runners in the U.S., 15.6 million people, will have to stop running at least once during the year due to injury. Millions more quit or avoid running because of injury or the fear of causing long-term damage. Yet, there have been few new ideas or fresh approaches to running and injury prevention. The symptoms are being treated, but the problem has not been solved - until now.

The ChiRunning program offers real solutions to injury prevention, stronger stamina and joyous running!

We are pleased and privileged to be hosting Dr. Busch and ChiRunning. Limited number of seats are available. Learn more and register here.

Testing Available during "Stand Up Straight for Life"

We will be offering simple testing at wholesale pricing for the participants of our Free Kids Day.

Vitamin D - Like adults, almost three quarters of US children have proven deficient in Vitamin D. Lack of Vitamin D can contribute to a laundry list of health problems, including new evidence of heightened asthma occurrence.More about Kids and Vitamin D.

Blood Type (ABO Rh testing) - Knowing your blood type is a key factor for proper individualized diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices. Lots of blood type facts.

Orzo Super Salad

This recipe was copied from 101 Cookbooks, an awesome blog with great healthy recipes. I encourage you all to check it out!

If you are going to transport this to an outdoor picnic or potluck, place all of the ingredients, layered, in a big bowl or container. Toss the avocado gently with a bit of lemon juice ahead of time - so it doesn't brown. Make sure there are a few inches of head room in the container, and you'll need some sort of lid. Carry the dressing in a separate jar. When you are ready to serve the salad, gently toss the ingredients with the dressing using your hands, or leave the lid on the container and gently shake/tumble it - not ideal but it works. You can double or triple this recipe to serve more of a crowd. To make it vegan, you know the drill, skip the feta. And GF-ers, you can swap in a gluten-free grain/rice (for the orzo) and make a grain salad out of this instead.

1 cup dried (whole wheat) orzo pasta
8 - 10 medium asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1-inch segments
1/2 a medium head of broccoli (or broccolini), cut into small trees
small handful of cilantro(or mint if you prefer), chopped

1 small clove of garlic, mashed with a big pinch of salt and chopped
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

a small handful of sprouts
1/3 cup almonds, toasted
1/2 small cucumber, cut into 1/4-inch pieces
1 medium avocado, sliced into small pieces
1/4 cup feta, crumbled

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Salt generously and boil the orzo per package instructions. Avoid over-boiling, you want your orzo to be cooked through, but maintain structure. About 30 seconds before the orzo is finished cooking stir the asparagus and broccoli into the orzo pot. Cook for the final 30 seconds, drain and run under a bit of cold water. Just long enough to stop the cooking.

In the meantime, whisk together the garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and more salt (if needed) into the dressing. Set aside.

When you are ready to serve the salad toss the orzo, asparagus, broccoli, and cilantro with about half the dressing. Add more dressing if needed, and toss well. Now add the sprouts, almonds, cucumber, avocado, and feta. Very gently toss a couple of times to distribute those ingredients throughout the salad and serve.

Serves 4.
